Welcome to the July edition of the newsletter.
This month is heavy on the Brat Pack, but June was a big month with the release of Brats, the documentary from Brat Packer Andrew McCarthy and I had some thoughts!
I also picked up his book and am loving it.
I chatted with the composer behind The Winchesters (and a bazillion seasons of Supernatural).
There’s the usual social media tips and tricks as well as a video on ten movies from 1984 that turned 40 this year (now I feel old!).
Let’s get to it!

LINKEDIN MARKETING
LinkedIn has Updated how Comment Threads Work
H/T to Matt Navarra for this one! It looks like LinkedIn is making it easier to manage the comments on posts and it’s a long time coming. The comments section of LinkedIn is where all the action is. Conversations are happening around content and engagement with those comments only helps boost those posts higher in the feed. Bravo!
SOCIAL MEDIA
The Best Link in Bio Tools for Social Media
This is a nice breakdown of choices for “link in bio” type programs. Personally, I use Linktree and have used it for a long time, but know other people prefer other things. This is mostly for Instagram where you can’t actually share links in posts, but if you have your own website and want to direct folks there to get the traffic instead of a third party, here’s a super easy hack.
Create a page on your website specifically for links on Instagram and call it “Instagram” or “Instagram Links”, so the page URL would look like this: www.taifreligh.com/instagram. Now I no longer have a page like this on my website, but this would be the URL you put into your website link space on Instagram.
Design that page in the same style as the rest of your website and include the links and a brief description so people know which ones to click on. When they see that post on your Instagram about “Ten Ways to Get Higher Audience Engagement” and you send them to the link in bio, it will be easy to find on your website.
This also ensures that people are going to your website and staying within the experience of your brand and not somebody else’s. Let me know in the comments if you use this technique or if you just rely on a “link in bio” app instead!
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)
Meta’s Testing AI Comment Summaries on Facebook
I have actually found this to be incredibly helpful on Facebook. This is the type of thing that AI can do to actually save time. I come across so many posts on Facebook where there are a bazillion comments and I don’t want to read through them all. I just look at the Meta AI summary of the conversation in the comments and I get everything I need in a glance. AI can be a powerful tool to summarize conversations, email threads, meetings, etc. I for one am very happy with this use of AI. How about you?
WHAT I’M LISTENING TO
Literally! with Rob Lowe (PODCAST)
I found out about this podcast through my TikTok community. I had posted a video review of the Andrew McCarthy documentary Brats, about the infamous Brat Pack of the 80s. Rob Lowe is a member of the Brat Pack and I thought that he had some very insightful things to say about the moniker. Somebody in the comments mentioned he had a podcast and had interviewed Andrew McCarthy. I immediately looked it up and saved the interviews with McCarthy, Molly Ringwald, and Anthony Michael Hall. I’m halfway through the Andrew McCarthy interview and loving it. Of course Rob has guests from many different industries on his show and there are several seasons worth, so I may stick around and listen to some other ones after the Brat Pack ones!
Have you listened to his podcast? What did you think? Any interviews in particular that stood out to you"?
This is literally a podcast where people I love, admire, and know well will be in a safe space to really let their hair down (assuming they have any). I will cover the thoughtful to the extremely random. So join me and my guests from the world of movies, TV, sports, music, and culture for fun, wide-ranging, free-wheeling conversations.
WHAT I’M WATCHING
THE BEAR (Season 3)
This show is not for the faint of heart. If you stress out easily, you won’t want to be watching Carmy lose his shit in the middle of the kitchen and go full moose bullwinkle. But if you can handle it, it’s a really good show with some fantastic actors. The standout this season of The Bear for me was Jamie Lee Curtis. That hospital scene was a masterclass in acting and if she doesn’t get the Emmy for supporting actress, nothing makes sense in this world. I’m still reeling from last season’s Christmas dinner episode. She is a force to be reckoned with. Do you watch? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
WHAT I’M READING
BRAT: An 80s Story
I watched the Brat Pack documentary Brats from Andrew McCarthy and thoroughly enjoyed it. You can see my review below in the TikTok section. Andrew also has a book out (it came out before the documentary ever existed) and I’m slowly working my way through it. I love anything 80s and there’s nothing more quintessential than the Brat Pack. I’m looking forward to finishing this. If you listen to Andrew’s episode on Rob Lowe’s podcast, he talks about the book and it’s fascinating. Have you read it? Is it on your list?
ENTERTAINMENT
Exclusive Interview – Composer Philip White On Supernatural And The Winchesters
This was a fascinating conversation to have as I am currently VERY SLOWLY working my way through Supernatural for the first time. I am currently on season 8 episode 10 out of 300 seasons. I am fascinated by the concept of The Winchesters now that I am this deep into the show and am disappointed it only lasted one season, but I still plan on watching it. You can catch the trailer HERE and read the interview with the show composer at the link below.
